During its institutional life, FAN has accomplished important achievements in different areas:

  • Legislation and Policies on Biodiversity

o        Preparation of Annex C of the Superintendence of Agrarian norms on criteria to guide the identification of zones apt for the implementation of biodiversity protection and conservation units on private property (2004)

o        Preparation of technical guidelines for the protection and conservation of the Blue-Bearded Parrot (Ara glaucogularis) (2994)

o        Collaboration with the preparation and departmental coordination of the National Strategy for the Conservation of Bolivian Biodiversity, 2002 

o        Opinion on a project to regulate nurseries, greenhouses, in vitro crop reproduction and other types of artificial reproduction (2002) 

o        Technical opinion on the commercialization of endemic species of Bolivian flora (2002)

o        Technical opinion on a project to regulate the accreditation of scientific institutions (2002)

o        Technical opinion on the regulation of zoological nurseries (2002)

o        Technical Opinion on sports hunting of wild animals (2002)

o         National Protected Areas System Regulation for the Management of the Fauna (2000)

o        National Protected Areas System Regulation of Artistic, Audiovisual, Scientific and Literary Activities (2002)

o        Technical opinion on the Biodiversity Law (1998)

o        Support for the development of environmental legislation:  Decision 391 of the Cartagena Accord (Common Regimen for Genetic Resources of the Andean Community of Nations) (1995)

  •  Planning for biodiversity Conservation and Sustainable Development

o        Analysis of Conservation Gaps in the National Protected Areas  System (GAP Analysis) (2004)

o        Conservation Vision for the Amboró – Madidi Corridor (AMC).  First scientific – technical planning instrument for managing a biological corridor in Bolivia, supported by the principal international conservation organizations.  TNC-WWF-CI 82003)

o        Management Plan for the Tucavaca Municipal Reserve (RMT) – Municipality of Roboré, first municipal reserve in the country (2002)

  • Conservation and Sustainable Development Plan for the Dry Chiquitano Forest, Cerrado and Swamplands of Bolivia, a unique eco-regional planning instrument that covers seven million hectares in the country (2000-2001)

o        Diagnostic of the Amboró – Madidi Ecological Corridor (AMC), which will connect several protected areas of Santa Cruz, Cochabamba, Beni and La Paz, for a total of nearly five million hectares (2000)

o        Eco-regional Planning in the Southwest Amazon Region – Bolivia Sub-division (1999).  The AMC was identified based on this.

o        Amboró National Park and Integrally Managed Natural Area Management Plan.  Management Plan for Noel Kempff Mercado National Park (1995 – 1997)  First instruments for the management of protected areas in the country.

  • Rapid biological assessments, (abbrev. in English as RAP), in several protected areas (1991).

o        Creation of the Blanco and Negro Rivers Wildlife Reserve (RVSRBN) (1990)

  • Management of protected areas
  • The beginning of private participation in the management of Bolivian national parks, under an international public tender (1995-2005).  FAN and the Government co-manage the Noel Kempff Mercado National Park, Natural Heritage of Humanity, 1,500,000 hectares.

o        Private conservation of the Corridor of the Americas (2001-2003).  One of the first private conservation projects in the country.

o        Amboró National Park “Parks in Danger” Program (2002-2007).

o        Noel Kempff Climate Action Project (NKCAP).  Largest climate change project for forest conservation in the world (1997-2027).

o        Among the first to achieve the execution of funds for a Debt-for-Nature Exchange Program 81993).

  • Amboró National Park “Parks in Danger” Program and Noel Kempff Mercado National Park (1991).  First proposal to be approved by said program at the continental level

o        Pioneers in supporting the basic protection of Amboró, Noel Kempff, and Madidi national parks (1988).

  • Scientific research

o        Discovery of more than 50 new plant species for science.

o        Live collection of native ornamental plants (1500 species) and In Vitro Collection (200 species).

o        Research & Development of botanical species with potential for commercialization and/or conservation.

o        Research on special carbon quantification techniques in forests for use in new carbon mitigation projects (Aerial Videography: Measurement of biomass with integrated video systems, cameras, lasers, and computers, all aboard aircraft (1997-2003).

o        Development of methodologies to predict biodiversity patterns (2001-2004)

o        Development of methodologies for analysis at the eco-regional level to prioritize conservation activities 81998-2004)

o        Development of scientific foundations for the development of biodiversity conservation policies relating to production (hydrocarbons and roads) (1998-2004)

o       Establishment of the scientific and organizational bases for the first environmental monitoring program of a protected area in Bolivia.  Amboró National Park (1997)

o        Implementation of a municipal participative management model for natural resources and biodiversity in municipalities neighboring protected areas, Comarapa and Mairana (2005)

o        Approximately 500 families have benefited from community strengthening projects related to protected areas, to date.

o        Operation of a sawmill and commercialization of CIBAPA lumber (2004)

o        Support for the design and execution of the “La Yunga” community eco-tourism project, IMNA, Amboró National Park (2002, 2004)

o        Support for the preparation and approval of the Bajo Paraguá OCL General Forest Management Plan (2002)

o        Support for the organization and consolidation of the Bajo Paraguá Indigenous Association (CIBAPA) (2001)

o       Beginning of the “Participative Community Planning” program, one of the first in the country to establish dialog with communities neighboring protected areas to harmonize the satisfaction of their needs with the conservation of biodiversity (1993)

 

  • Ecoturism

o        Model community eco-tourism project, La Yunga, IMNA of Amboró National Park, 2003-2005

o        Support for the strengthening and management of the Noel Kempff Mercado National Park Public Use Program since 1998.

o        Execution of the first eco-tourism program in Bolivia.  Development of infrastructure for lodging, tourist activities, equipment and training on customer service for visitor at Noel Kempff Mercado National Park, since 1993.

  • Information dissemination on biodiversity

o        Establishment of the FAN Publishing House, specializing in scientific publications on the conservation of biodiversity.  30 publications to date.

o        Library specializing in the conservation of biodiversity.

o        Implementation of informational mechanisms to diffuse information on biodiversity in Bolivia.

o        Approximately 2000 recipients of institutional bulletins for information and awareness on the conservation of biodiversity (FANoticias)

o        Positioning as a source of serious, reliable environmental information in the mass media and among the public in general.
