Introduction

The Amboró National Park is a large natural area of 637,000 ha, situated in the extreme east of the Andean region of the Santa Cruz Department. It is a zone of exceptional biodiversity due to its condition as a meeting point between four main biogeographical regions in Santa Cruz: the Southeast Amazon (humid tropical forests), the western Brazilian Shield (Cerrado and deciduous forests), the northern Chaco (dry forests) and the very diverse sub-tropical and temperate forests of the Andean mountains.

This mosaic of ecosystems houses a corresponding richness in fauna and flora diversity.

General information

The Amboró National Park was created in 1973 as the "Teniente Coronel Germán Busch" National Reserve and acquired the category and the name "Amboró" National Park in 1984, with an area of 180,000 ha. In 1991 this was enlarged to 637,000 ha, but in 1995 was reduced again to 442,500. The difference between these last two figures is the area of what is called the "Amboró Natural Area of Integrated management" (Area Natural de Manejo Integrado Amboró - ANMIA).

Inside the ANMIA are a variety of communities, summing a total of around 4,500 families, in eight municipalities.

FAN has supported the Amboró National Park since 1990 through a variety of projects.

FAN was in charge of its administration from 1991 until 1995, when the national Government took over.

Projects implemented by FAN

 Project title: Parks in Danger
Coverage: Amboró National Park.
Year: 2002 to 2007.
Donor: The Nature Conservancy
Description: Support the protection activities of the Park, support the creation of sustainable long-term financing, technical support and advice on the management of the area based on FAN's experience as co-administrator of NKMNP.

Project title: Private Conservation in the America's Corridor.
Coverage: Peripheral Zone of the Amboró National Park (PZA) and Natural Area of Integrated Management (ANMI).
Year: 2001 to 2004.
Donor: MacArthur Foundation through the Regional Alliance for Conservation Policies in Latin America and the Caribbean (Alianza Regional para Políticas de Conservación en América Latina y el Caribe - ARCA).
Description: The objective is to implement a pilot program for tools for private conservation through direct work with private owners interested in the conservation of areas of important biodiversity that are complementary to the Amboró National Park. Also to look for a financial strategies to collect funds for the management of the sites.

Project title: Ecotourism development with local communities in the Amboró Natural Area of Integrated Management.
Coverage: "La Yunga" community, southern zone of Amboró National Park
Year: 2002
Donor: Small Donations Program - UNDP
Description: Contribute to the protection of the biodiversity of the Park through the development of ecotourism as a low impact activity that benefits local communities. Includes the support of participative regional landuse planning, the design of tourist circuits in the tree fern forests, training of local families so that they can provide a concrete offer of tourist services.

Project title: Establishment of a basis for environmental monitoring of the Amboró National Park and ANMI.
Budget: 135,000.00 $us
Donor:

CARE - Bolivia

Date of implementation:

October 1997 to October 1999
Description: Establishment of a scientific and organizational basis to carry out regular follow-up of the changes, both quantitative and qualitative, that affect the biodiversity and ecological processes in the ANP and the ANMI, through the monitoring of biodiversity in different hierarchical levels, within a space-time multiple design, that ensures its usefulness for the management of the Park and ANMI.
In order to create a baseline for the monitoring system the following research projects were supported:

- " Monitoring of mammal species as bio-indicators in the Amboró National Park and Natural Area of Integrated Management "
- " Monitoring of bird species as bio-indicators in the Amboró National Park and Natural Area of Integrated Management "
- " Amphibians as bio-indicators of environmental changes in the Amboró National Park and Natural Area of Integrated Management "
- " Aquatic insects as bio-indicators of the water quality in the Amboró National Park and Natural Area of Integrated Management "
- " Population dynamics of tree ferns in the Amboró National Park and Natural Area of Integrated Management "
- " Geographic Information System for the monitoring of changes in landuse in the Amboró National Park and Natural Area of Integrated Management ".

Project title: Biological and ecological evaluation of the project "Prospecting in the 2D Seismic Block Amboró-Espejos".
Budget: 8,600.00 $US
Donor:

Petroleum Company Andina S.A.

Date of implementation:

June to August 2000.
Description: An independent document was prepared to establish a biological baseline, and analysis of environmental impacts and recommendations, for the different impacts that the seismic prospecting of the Block 2D in the Amboró National Park could cause.

Project title: Analysis of the establishment of private reserves in the peripheral area of the Amboró National Park.
Budget: 3,000.00 $us
Donor:

ANDINA Petroleum Company.

Date of implementation:

August 2000 to March 2001
Description: An analysis of the feasibility of the creation of private reserves in the peripheral area of the Amboró National Park including the consideration of a series of socioeconomic factors. Priority areas and less conflictive areas are defined for the creation of the private reserves.

Project title: Design, Implementation, Monitoring and Evaluation of the Conservation Plan for the Amboró - Madidi Corridor.
Budget: 66,899.78 $us
Donor:

USAID funds, channeled through WWF-Bolivia.

Date of implementation:

1st of January to 31st October 2000.
Description: During the project a preliminary biological and socioeconomic assessment was made on the biological corridor existing between the Amboró and Madidi National Parks, a preliminary analysis was also made of the state of conservation of the area, the first recommendations for conservation activities were made and a Monitoring and Evaluation System was designed.

Project title: Scientific coordination to obtain biological data from the Amboró - Madidi Corridor.
 Budget: 18,753.00 $us
 Donor:

USAID funds, channeled through WWF-Bolivia.

Date of implementation:

1st April 2001 to 30th April 2002.
Description: During the project the scientific means will be created to carry out biological research in strategic areas inside the Amboró - Madidi Corridor. Joint botanical collections will be made with other researchers, and a vegetation map will be prepared for the area. A database will be set up containing the new information generated and the results from the Project for the "Design, Implementation, Monitoring and Evaluation of the Conservation Plan for the Amboró-Madidi Corridor" will be adapted for use in the local municipalities.
